Web Site Redesign for Beej Inc.

Beej Inc. specializes in management consultation and organizational development, and also provides counseling and temporary executive services.

The company had a basic Web site, but much of the information had become dated. When we were asked to update the president's résumé, we discussed other ways the site might be improved.

Beej Inc. had three main goals for the redesign:

• Maintain a calm, solid look, in keeping with the company's image.
• Focus attention more on the company's services and less on the logo and the president.
• Unify the site and improve navigation.

We met Beej's goals by:

• Using a background that remains nondistracting but is warmer and more inviting.
• Reducing the size of the logo and the president's picture and arranging page elements to draw the eye to the company's services.
• Including the logo and slogan on all internal pages for a unified look, and providing clear and complete navigation links on each page.

We exceeded Beej's goals by:

• Adding visual interest and enhancing site unity with an image of a compass -- inspired by Beej's secondary slogan, "Helping people and organizations find their way" -- and with compass rose bullets on the home page.
• Providing a server-side include that lets the president update the "What's New" page simply by editing a plain-text file.
